Fear - Isabella Thoburn, 1840-1901
The least difficult thing a foreign missionary has to learn is the language; the part of her work which she has the most reason to dread is its responsibility. (Isabella Thoburn, 1840-1901, India)

It is remarkable that God began this work among the Indians at a time when I had the least hope, and to my apprehension the least rational prospect of success. David Brainerd, 1718-1747, Missionary to North American Indians

Fear and love are the inseparable elements of true religion, Fear preserves love from degenerating into presumptuous familiarity; love prevents fear from becoming a servile and cringing dread. AF Kirkpatrick the book of Psalms, Baker 1982
We do not know the worthy of one single drop of blood, one single tea. All is grace. If the eternal is the eternal, the last word for each one of us belongs to Him. François Mauriac(from the Forward to Night by Elie Wiesel Then one day they expelled all the foreign Jews from Sighet. And Moché the Beadle was a foreigner. Crammed into cattle trains by Hungarian police, they wept bitterly. We stood on the platform and wept too. They train disappeared on the horizon; it left nothing behind but its thick, dirty smoke. I heard a Jew behind me heave a sigh. “what can we expect?” He said. “It’s war……” One day, just as I was just going into the synagogue, I saw, sitting on a bench near the door, Moché the Beadle. He told his story and that of his companions. The train full of deportees had crossed the Hungarian frontier and on Polish territory had been taken in charge by the Gestapo. There it had stopped. The Jews to get and climb into the lorries. The lorries drove toward a forest. The Jeews were made to get out. They were made to dig huge graves. And when they had finished ther their work, the Gestapo began theirs. Without passion, without haste, they slaughtered their prisoners. Each one ahad to go upt to the hole and present his neck. Babies were thrown into the air and the machine gunners used them as targets….. how had Moché the Beadle escaped? Miraculously. He was wounded in the lege and taken for dead….. Throught long days and nights, he went from one Jewish house to another, telling the story of Malka, the Young girl who had taken three days to die, and of Tobias, the tailor,, who had begged to be killed before his sons…. Moche had changed. There was no longer any joy in his eyes. He no longer sang. He no longer talked to me of God or the cabbala, but only of what he had seen. People refused not only to believe his stories, but even to listen to them. “He’s just trying to make us pity him. What an imagination ion he has!” they said. Or even: “Poor fellow. He’s gone mad.” “Jews, Listen to me. It’s all I ask of you. I don’t want money or pity. Only listen to me.” He would cry between prayers at dusk and the evening prayers. I did not believe him myself. "Night" Elie Wiesel 1958
Sri Lanka is a cricket crazy Country. CT Studd Played cricket for the English all England team. And of course he then became a missionary to China and finally then to Africa; there He started the Heart of Africa Mission which became WEC international, today one of the large mission groups. He lived deep in the jungle, and his mail would come only once in two weeks. ….CT Stud would make it into quite the ritual. All the people would stand around and they would open the mail. Once quite a lot of money came, in the mail. And CT Studd said “bless God Forever, he knows what a bunch of grumblers we are. He sent enough to keep us quite.” Once a small amount came, when the small amount came CT Studd said, “hallelujah, we must be growing in grace he thinks we are learning to trust Him.” Once no money came, He said Hallelujah praise God forever; we are in the kingdom already.” For in the kingdom there is neither eating nor drinking, but righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. CT Stud Quoted By Ajith Fernando at the Bethlehem Conference on How Must a Pastor Die.CT Stud is a hero for many of us in Sri Lanka.
